Fiberglass – Professional Information

The material known in Israel as “fiberglass” is actually glass fibers (Fiber = fibers; Glass = glass), a polymer reinforced with thin glass fibers. The initial use of this fascinating material was for insulation purposes. However, within a few years, its applications expanded into other fields. For a long time, vehicles made from this material were produced globally, including in Israel. In recent years, the use of this unique material has extended to additional industries: fiberglass rods for various purposes are manufactured from fiberglass, as well as certain types of pipes.

What are the advantages of fiberglass over other materials? What products can be made from it? Where can you find various products made from this material? All the answers – below.

The Development of Fiberglass for Commercial Use

Research into the commercial use of fiberglass began extensively in the 1930s. This was a key milestone for the aviation industry. Its first major civilian application was in building boats and sports car bodies, where it gained recognition in the 1950s. Its use has since expanded into all industrial sectors. Fiberglass is also used in the communications industry for antenna covers due to its excellent reception of RF waves and low signal attenuation properties.

All the Advantages of Fiberglass

The major advantages of fiberglass include its significant strength and the fact that it is not easily breakable. Another advantage is its excellent insulation properties. It is highly resistant to chemicals, non-conductive, and transparent to radar and radio waves. Additionally, its high strength-to-weight ratio makes it ideal for manufacturing products that require high durability against weather conditions on one hand, and easy portability on the other.

However, the most significant advantage of glass fibers lies in their relatively easy moldability, enabling the creation of complex products in a very short time. Moreover, this material can be mixed with other substances to create new compounds with enhanced properties, increasing their versatility across a wide range of industries.

Products Manufactured from Fiberglass

Products made from glass fibers serve industries, agriculture, and the processed food industry, mainly as packaging materials. The pharmaceutical industry also utilizes this material to produce weather-resistant packaging, especially against high humidity and heat. As mentioned earlier, fiberglass is used to manufacture various products, including fiberglass pipes, fiberglass tanks, bathtubs, and small pools. Large fiberglass tanks are also common worldwide and particularly in Israel.

In addition, fiberglass can be used to manufacture portable homes and structures that can be relocated. The combination of a strong material with excellent insulation properties and low specific weight makes fiberglass ideal for this purpose. Such mobile structures are suitable as comfortable accommodations for workers at construction sites or in remote areas, requiring continuous stays at the workplace. The ease of processing this material also allows for the creation of long pipes in various sizes and diameters that are highly durable even under extreme conditions.

Fiberglass Tanks

Many storage tanks are made from fiberglass, with capacities reaching up to 1,000 cubic meters. Tanks are much stronger when produced using the “knitting” method. This involves winding fiberglass reinforced with polyester around a metal mold at an oblique angle. Such tanks are used for chemical storage due to their strength and high resistance to a wide range of hazardous chemicals. Fiberglass is also utilized for septic tanks.
