What is Teflon?
Teflon, an incredibly versatile material with a wide range of applications, was discovered in 1938 by Roy Plunkett while working at DuPont. It was introduced as a commercial product in 1946. Derived from the simplest alkane, ethene, Teflon is characterized by an extremely low level of friction – the second lowest of all solids known to man (after diamond-like carbon). This property makes it commonly used for coating pans (and other cooking utensils), allowing frying without oil and preventing food from sticking to the pan. Teflon is extremely hydrophobic (water-repellent); when water is poured into a Teflon-coated pan, it separates and forms droplets, minimizing contact with the Teflon surface. Its strength enables it to withstand fluoroantimonic acid – the strongest known acid.
Due to its hydrophobic, non-wetting, high density, and high-temperature resistance properties, PTFE (Teflon) is an incredibly versatile material with a wide range of applications, though it is perhaps best known for its non-stick properties.
